Arete Honors Program students Yi-Jun Chang and Hsiu-Chi Tsai, together with teammates from National Tsing Hua University’s College of Engineering and Department of Physics, formed an intercollegiate team that won the championship in the competition.
In response to Taiwan’s rapid transition into a super-aged society and the growing prevalence of dementia, the team proposed an innovative solution centered on “proactive prevention, real-time detection, and autonomous stabilization.” Their design embeds a sensor module inside a pair of shoes, integrating “data geofencing” technology to precisely detect whether an elderly wearer has strayed from their usual activity area. When an abnormal movement path is detected, the system immediately alerts family members and caregivers—helping reduce the risk of getting lost and adding an intelligent layer of safety protection for seniors.
According to the organizers, this year’s hackathon—held under the theme “AI Empowerment for Smarter Public Services”—attracted numerous teams addressing municipal challenges through data science, IoT sensing, smart transportation, and public safety innovations. The students’ project stood out for its strong public value and its potential social impact on elderly care and urban governance, earning unanimous praise from the judges.
We are deeply grateful to the students for responding to social challenges through hands-on innovation, demonstrating professionalism, communication, and integration skills. Looking ahead, we hope more Baichuan students will continue to propose impactful, interdisciplinary solutions—particularly in areas such as eldercare and community well-being—to help create a safer and more inclusive environment for aging populations.
